Box Score MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University football team sent their senior class out on a positive note on Saturday afternoon with a 50-20 win over The Lincoln University. The Hawks end their season with a 2-8 overall record and 1-6 finish in CIAA play while the Lions conclude the year with a 1-9 mark and 0-7 finish in league play.
Chowan recognized 14 senior football student-athletes and two senior Sapphires prior to the contest and recognized seven
Jim Garrison Hall of Fame inductees at halftime.
The Hawks tallied 462 offensive yards in the contest while the Lions had 416 offensive yards in the setback.
DaSean Martin led the effort for the Hawks with 134 rushing yards and four touchdowns over the course of the afternoon. Clanton had seven carries for 102 yards and one touchdown while
Ryan Nolan added 13 carries for 37 yards and one rushing score. Nolan also completed nine passes for 136 yards in the victory.
Antjuan Randall caught three passes for 28 yards while
Damian Ellis hauled in two passes for 44 yards.
Defensively,
Andrew Denny led all players in the contest with 15 tackles (13 solo, two assisted) and a pass breakup.
Roderick Lindsey added nine tackles (nine solo), one forced fumble, one breakup and hauled in twocritical interceptions in the win.
Edward McKenzie completed 20 of 43 passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns for the Lions. Stephen Scott totaled 30 carries for 176 yards and one touchdown. Larquise Hobbs caught seven passes for 62 yards while Anthony Green and Brakeem Jackson each caught touchdown passes in the loss.
Brion Robinson paced the Lions with nine tackles, all of which were solo. Carl Richardson added seven tackles (six solo, one assisted) with two tackles for loss (six yards).
The Lions struck first when Edward McKenzie connected with Anthony Green on a 29 yard touchdown pass. The play capped an eight play, 53 yard drive. Brett Arkelian made good on the point after attempt resulting in a 7-0 lead for Lincoln with 11:37 remaining in the first quarter.
The Hawks answered back with a score of their own at the 4:55 mark in the first quarter.
DaSean Martin's six yard run completed a successful 15 play, 82 yard drive. Martin solidified an 8-6 lead for the Hawks as he made good on the two-point conversion.
With the ball on Lincoln's 32 yard line, Nolan's 31 yard pass to
Damian Ellis set up a one yard touchdown run for Nolan at the 5:13 mark in the second quarter. The Hawks were unable to capitalize on the two point conversion attempt, but used Martin's 73 yard touchdown with 2:29 on the clock before halftime to extend their advantage. A successful run by Nolan gave the Hawks a successful two point conversion resulting in a 22-7 advantage heading into halftime.
Lincoln orchestrated a 14 play, 69 yard drive on their first possession in the second half to cut the deficit. Arkelian made good on the point after attempt to the make the score 22-14. The Lions capped off a 91 yard drive on their next possession with a 56 yard rush by Scott to leave the Hawks with a mere two point lead (22-20).
The Hawks answered the call on their first drive of the fourth quarter. After taking over on downs on their own 40 yard line, Nolan's four yard rush followed by a 56 yard run by Clanton secured another score for the Blue and White. Hahula's point after gave the Hawks a 29-20 lead with 12:11 remaining in the contest.
Chowan's Lindsey picked off McEnzie's pass on the 25 yard line on the next drive and returned it 23 yards to set up Martin's touchdown rush on the following play. With a 35-20 lead Hahula's point after gave the Hawks a comfortable 36-20 advantage. The Hawks held on to the momentum for the remainder of the contest, scoring 14 unanswered points to confirm the 50-20 win.
JR Williams' 27 yard touchdown run with 8:18 left in the game provided a successful ending to a three play, 35 yard drive and Martin's 24 yard touchdown run with 2:20 left in the contest wrapped up a five play, 63 yard drive for the Blue and White. Hahula made good on both point after attempts.
The Hawks improve to 4-1 in the series against the Lions. They will return to action at the start of the 2015 season.
