Hawks Celebrate Seniors with CIAA Northern Division Title and Sweep of Virginia Union

The Hawks celebrated Senior Night on Friday.
Box Score MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University volleyball team clinched the CIAA Northern Division title on their home court on Friday evening with a 3-0 victory over Virginia Union University. With the win, the Hawks claim the top divisional seed heading into next week's CIAA Championship Tournament and end the regular season with a 23-6 overall record and 14-2 mark in CIAA play. The Lady Panthers finish fourth in the CIAA Northern Division and head into the tournament with an 11-16 overall mark and a 9-7 finish in league play.

Chowan made quick work of the Lady Panthers and claimed the win behind 40 team kills. They forced 24 errors in the victory.

Melanie Chaussee led all players in the match with 11 kills while Cindy Ehrich notched a match-high 15 digs. Allison Smith added 34 assists for the Blue and White while Nikira Fults tallied four blocks (three solo, one assisted).

Kristin Madison paced the Lady Panthers with 10 kills in the setback while Esha Atkins totaled 19 assists. Ellie Parsons, Chelsea Beaudoin and Taylor Whitherspoon all posted double-digit digs in the win.

With the score tied 10-10 in the first set, a Lady Panther attack error led to three straight points for the Hawks. Chowan maintained the lead from that point forward and easily earned the 25-15 set win with a kill by Jordan Miller. The Hawks held a narrow 12- 8 advantage midway through the second set before rattling off eight straight points behind Ehrich's serves, resulting in a 20-8 lead. Three kills by the Hawks and two Lady Panther errors propelled Chowan to a 25-15 win in the second set.

Chowan continued the momentum in set three and quickly built a 13-5 advantage. The Hawks led by as many as ten points midway through the set before securing the 25-18 win with four straight Virginia Union errors.

The Hawks head to Fayetteville, NC next week to compete in the CIAA Championship Tournament. Play begins November 14th in Capel Arena on the campus of Fayetteville State University.
