Cardinals Top Hawks in NCAA Atlantic Regional Play

Box Score WHEELING, WV- The Chowan University volleyball team fell to Wheeling Jesuit University in straight sets on Thursday afternoon in the opening round of the NCAA Atlantic Regional Tournament.  The Hawks end their season with a 26-7 record while the Cardinals advance with a 36-3 record. 

Melanie Chaussee recorded a team-high seven kills in the match followed by Jordan Miller with five kills.  Allison Smith handed out 14 assists in the contest while Cindy Ehrich hauled in 20 digs.  Nikira Fults notched five blocks for the Blue and White in the loss.

Corrin Early led all players in the contest with nine kills while Andrea Thobe tallied 45 assists for Wheeling Jesuit.  Kayce Krucki hauled in 15 digs for the Cardinals. 
Wheeling Jesuit came out firing in the first set, quickly jumping to a 5-1 lead.  A kill by Chaussee made the score 5-2 but Chowan was unable to overcome the early deficit.  The Cardinals led by as many as 14 points in the set before topping the Hawks 25-11 in set one. 

Wheeling Jesuit jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in set two before a Cardinal error and block by Fults and Miller put the Hawks on the board. Chowan battled with Wheeling Jesuit early in the second set and stayed within striking distance of the Cardinals through the majority of the set.  With the score 20-15, kills by Krucki, Emily Blank, Katie Campbell along with two Hawk attack errors confirmed the 25-17 win for Wheeling Jesuit. 

The Cardinals notched the first point in the third set but Brittany Tschida responded with a block for the Hawks to knot the score 1-1.  Wheeling Jesuit capitalized on a 7-0 run from that point forward to take a 8-1 lead before another block by Tschida put the Hawks back on the board. With Wheeling Jesuit leading 13-6, a kill by Krucki contributed to a 6-0 run, leaving the Hawks trailing 19-6.  A kill by Krucki confirmed the 25-10 win for the Cardinals. 

The Hawks will return to action in the fall of 2015.  Wheeling Jesuit advances to the NCAA Atlantic Region Semi-Final with the victory.  They will take on Seton Hill at 7:30pm on Friday.
