Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, NC- The Chowan University volleyball team defeated the Winston-Salem State University Lady Rams on Saturday afternoon in Capel Arena. The Hawks advance to Sunday's CIAA Championship match with the 3-0 victory, while the Lady Rams' season comes to an end with a 15-14 record.
Chowan and Winston-Salem State battled in set one with the Hawks earning the 26-24 victory to set the tone for the match. The Hawks powered past the Lady Rams 25-17 in the second set before clipping Winston-Salem State 25-21 in set three.
Jordan Miller led all players in the contest with 18 kills for the Blue and White.
Suraya Chase and
Melanie Chaussee chipped in 10 kills apiece in the victory.
Allison Smith handed out 45 assists and collected 11 digs while
Cindy Ehrich grabbed a match-high 21 digs.
Olivia Owens led the effort for the Lady Rams with 14 kills in the match. Kayla Brass notched 21 assists while Jasmine Smith hauled in 14 digs for Winston-Salem State.
The first set was closely contest as neither team was able to maintain a lead of more than five points through the duration. With the set knotted 24-24, a kill by
Nikira Fults followed by a kill by Miller confirmed the 26-24 victory for the Hawks.
The Lady Rams built a quick 4-0 lead early in the second set. With the score tied 8-8, a Winston-Salem State attack error gave the Hawks their first lead of the set. The score was tied on two occasions before a block by Chowan's Chaussee and
Brittany Tschida gave the Hawks the lead. Chowan maintained the lead for the remainder of the set before clinching the 25-17 win.
The third set was an early battle for momentum, but with the score tied 10-10 midway through the set, a kill by Miller gave the Hawks the advantage. Chowan secured a spot in the CIAA Championship with a kill by Fults. The final score was 25-21.
The Hawks will compete in the CIAA Championship on Sunday at 1:00pm in Capel Arena. Chowan will face the winner of Saturday's Fayetteville State/Virginia State semi-final contest.
