Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, NC –The Chowan University volleyball team advanced to the CIAA Volleyball Championship Semi-Final match on Thursday afternoon with a 3-0 win over Saint Augustine's University. The Hawks advance to the next round with a 24-6 overall record while the Lady Falcons' season comes to an end with a 9-18 mark.
Jordan Miller led all players in the contest with 13 kills in the win.
Melanie Chaussee and
Suraya Chase each tallied nine kills while
Nikira Fults chipped in six kills.
Allison Smith notched 36 assists and nine digs while
Cindy Ehrich hauled in 14 digs for the Blue and White.
Olivia Porter collected 11 kills for Saint Augustine's while Mikayla Pettyjohn added five kills in the setback. Julissea Thomas dished out 11 assists while Porter and Thomas both totaled double digit digs.
After trailing 3-0 early in the first set, the Hawks responded with three consecutive points using two Lady Falcon service errors and a kill by Chaussee to knot the score. With the score tied 6-6, a kill by Miller followed by three straight Saint Augustine errors gave the Hawks a 9-6 advantage. Chowan maintained the lead for the remainder of the set, and built their lead to as many as six points (20-14) using back- to- back kills by Chaussee. Fults' block followed by a Lady Falcon error secured the 25-16 win for the Hawks in set one.
Saint Augustine's drew first blood in set one with a kill by Porter. Chaussee answered with a kill for Chowan. After gaining a 6-5 advantage, the Hawks pulled away 11-6 using kills from Chase and Miller and capitalizing on Lady Falcon errors. Chowan maintained control for the remainder of the set and cruised to a25-16 victory.
Brittany Tschida's kill secured the win for the Blue and White.
A kill by Chase and two Lady Falcon errors resulted in a quick 3-0 lead for the Hawks in set three. From there, the Hawks built their lead to 16-4 highlighted by a 6-0 run to build a commanding advantage. Saint Augustine's outscored the Hawks 11-2 on the next run to make the score 18-15. Chowan held on the advantage despite the shift in momentum and earned the 25-17 set win with a kill by Miller.
The Hawks will take on the winner of the Elizabeth City State University/Winston-Salem State University quarterfinal match on Friday at 3:00pm.
