Box Score MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University volleyball team earned a 3-1 win over the University of Mount Olive on Tuesday evening in nonconference play. The Hawks improve to 21-6 with the win while the Trojans slip to 7-20 on the year with the setback. The Hawks hosted their annual Dig Pink match on Tuesday.
Jordan Miller led the effort with nine kills in the win.
Nikira Fults added eight kills while
Melanie Chaussee chipped in with seven kills.
Allison Smith tallied 28 assists and 11 digs while
Cindy Ehrich led all players in the contest with 23 digs.
Sarah Watkins paced the Trojans with 11 kills. Casey Fiechter and Britni Johnson notched 15 and 12 digs, respectively.
Mount Olive used a 6-0 run early in the first set to take a 9-5 lead. Both teams battled for control throughout the set with neither team gaining more than a three point lead. With the Hawks leading 22-21, a kill by Fults and Trojan attack error gave Chowan a 24-21 advantage. A Mount Olive service error secured the 25-22 set one win for the Hawks.
With the second set knotted 10-10, a kill by
Suraya Chase sparked a 4-0 run for the Blue and White. Chowan maintained the lead for the remainder of the set and secured the 25-17 win with
Brianna Smith's service ace.
The momentum shifted in favor of Mount Olive late in the third set. With the Trojans leading 17-15, the Hawks scored eight straight points (seven off Ehrich's serves) to pull away 22-17. Mount Olive responded with a 7-0 run of their own to gain a 24-22 advantage. A Trojan attack error put the Hawks within striking distance, but a kill by Danielle Plente confirmed the 25-23 set win for Mount Olive.
Chowan fought back in set four. With the score tied 3-3, a Mount Olive attack error sparked a 6-0 run for the Hawks. Although the Trojans pulled within two points midway through the set (14-12), Chowan maintained the lead for the remainder of the contest to pull out the 25-17 win.
The Hawks return to conference action on November 3
rd when they host Virginia State University. The CIAA Northern Division match-up is slated for 6:00pm in the Helms Center.
