Box Score PETERSBURG, VA- The Chowan University volleyball team dropped a critical CIAA Northern Division match-up on Thursday evening. The Hawks came up short in a 3-2 decision against Virginia State University, and suffered their first divisional loss on the season. Chowan moves to 12-5 overall and 8-2 in league play while the Lady Trojans improve to 8-4 on the year and 6-3 against CIAA competition.
Jordan Miller tallied a team-high 19 kills in the loss while
Suraya Chase and
Nikira Fults each collected 9 kills apiece.
Cindy Ehrich hauled in 38 digs while
Allison Smith notched 43 assists. Dierdre Carter paced the Lady Trojans with 22 kills in the victory. Imani Wood and Alexsys Pullen added 11 and 10 kills, respectively while Miranda Bass had 40 assists. Virginia State had five players with double-digit digs, led by Adriana Hazou with 25.
The Hawks jumped out an early 5-1 lead in the first set and held on to the momentum to secure a 25-20 victory. The Lady Trojans responded with a 25-20 win of their own in the second set. Virginia State forced eight Chowan errors and trailed on just one occasion before clinching a 25-20 victory in set three.
With the score tied 12-12 in set four, a kill by Chase sparked a 5-0 run for the Hawks. Chowan maintained the advantage for the remainder of the set and clinched the 25-18 victory with a kill by
Brittany Tschida. In the deciding fifth set, with the score tied 8-8, a block by Virginia State led to seven straight points and a 15-8 victory for the Lady Trojans.
The Hawks return to action on October 9
th when they travel to Elizabeth City State University. The CIAA Northern Division contest is slated to begin at 6:00pm.
