Box Score MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University football team suffered their sixth straight setback on Saturday evening in a 40-29 loss to Virginia Union University. The Hawks slip to 1-6 on the year and 0-4 in CIAA play with the loss while the Panthers move to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in league play.
Virginia Union advances to 5-2 in the series against Chowan.
Dain McFarland completed 18-32 passes for the Blue and White and tallied 262 passing yards along with three touchdowns. He connected with
Antjuan Randall five times for 84 yards and
Dexter Green three times for 57 yards.
JR Williams had six carries totaling 81 yards.
Kenneth Graham was 21-39 on the evening. He totaled three touchdowns and 271 yards for the Panthers. Cassius McDowell notched 11 carries for 139 yards while Jamaal Wright hauled in eight receptions for a game-high 122 yards.
Andrew Denny led the effort for Chowan defensively with nine tackles (six solo, three assisted).
Kemaree Alcorn followed with eight tackles (five solo, three assisted) and two sacks. Charles Davis paced the Panthers with eight tackles (seven solo, one assisted), one sack, on tackle for loss, and an interception.
The Hawks struck first when McFarland connected with Martin on a 49 yard touchdown pass at the 12:30 mark in the first quarter.
Nick Hahula made good on the point after attempt to hand the Hawks an early 7-0 lead.
Virginia Union responded with 34 unanswered points to take a commanding 34-7 lead heading into halftime.
Down but not out, the Hawks regrouped at the start of the second half. Martin's two yard touchdown run capped a four play, 70 yard drive. Hahula made good on the point after to make the score 34-14 early in the third quarter.
Troy Krepich responded for Virginia Union. He kicked two field goals for the Panthers, with the second setting a new school record (55 yards).
With 10:29 left in the contest, Williams hauled in McFarland's 37 yard pass which concluded an eight play, 79 yard drive. A two point conversion made the score 40-22. McFarland found Williams once more on a six yard touchdown pass and Hahula made good on the point after to make the score 40-29 with 6:05 left in the game.
The offensive spark proved to be too little too late as the Hawks fell to Virginia Union 40-29.
Chowan looks to recover next Saturday when they travel to compete against Elizabeth City State University. The CIAA Northern Division match-up kicks off at 1:30pm.
