Pioneers Pummel Chowan

Cameron Stover threw for 319 yards on Saturday and four touchdown passes.
Box Score FAIRFIELD, CT- The Chowan University Hawks fell to 1-2 on the young season after an 78-35 loss to the Pioneers of Sacred Heart University on Saturday afternoon.  The Pioneers took full advantage of a Homecoming crowd and used the momentum to move to 4-0 on the season and score a program record of 78 points.  The Hawks were held to a mere 13 rushing yards in comparison to 308 by the Pioneers.  Cameron Stover threw for 319 yards and four touchdown passes in the loss with Dain McFarland coming in for relief of Stover and accounting for 84 passing yards and one touchdown pass. Robert Holland caught 13 passes for 143 yards.  Holland and Ryan Nolan each caught two touchdown passes in the loss. 

Defensively, Dakorion DeSamme and Cornell Duncan led all defensive players in the game with 11 tackles.  Duncan collected eight solo tackles. 

For Sacred Heart, RJ Noel and Evan Pittman teamed up for 195 passing yards in the win, with Noel throwing for 182 of those yards with three touchdowns. 

The Hawks took an early lead in the contest.  Stover connected with Antony Clanton on a 66 yard pass on their first offensive play.  Noboa made good on the point after attempt to give Chowan a 7-0 lead.  Chowan extended their lead to 14-0 after a failed snap on a punt by Sacred Heart resulted in Chowan recovering the ball on the nine-yard line.  Stover connected with Holland on a nine yard touchdown pass, and Noboa made good on the point after attempt to secure the lead. 

Sacred Heart answered back in the next series with Noel connecting with Tyler Dube on a 23 yard pass, followed by a two point conversion.  Sean Bell's five yard touchdown run and Chris Rodger's point after attempt put the Pioneers in the lead with a 15-14 edge.  David Berment added a score for the Pioneers on a returned blocked punt and Chris Rogers' point after attempt extended Sacred Heart's lead 22-14 at the end of the first quarter. 

From there, it was all about the Pioneers.  Sacred Heart outscored the Hawks 56-21 in the remaining three quarters en-route to the 78-35 win. 

Chowan looks to recover next Saturday when they return to Murfreesboro to host Shaw University in their first CIAA match-up of the season.  Kick-off is slated for 6:00pm.

Sacred Heart remains undefeated on the season and will compete against Bucknell next Saturday in a 6:00pm contest.
