Box Score 2 MOUNT OLIVE, NC – Brett Garrett was outstanding on the mound in the opening game, but it was not enough to give Chowan University a win against Mount Olive College in Wednesday's doubleheader. The Hawks, who finish the 2011 season with a 30-20 record, fell to the Trojans by scores of 5-0 and 11-3.
Garrett (8-5) entered the sixth inning of game one with a three-hit shutout as neither team had scored. The Trojans, who are ranked #2 nationally, finally got their offense going in the home half of the sixth when they managed five hits which led to five runs. Chowan also committed two errors in that inning.
The Hawks could not mount a comeback in the seventh inning, and they fell 5-0. William Ward recorded Chowan's lone hit of the game in the third inning, when he lined a single up the middle.
Mount Olive opened the nightcap in the same fashion they closed the opener. The Trojans scored five runs in the first inning and three in the second inning to open up an early 8-0 lead. The Hawks put two runs on the board in the fourth inning behind a two-RBI home run from Justin Bagbey. Brett Overton scored on the bomb after he singled to lead off the frame.
Adam Capps scored on a William Ward single in the sixth inning to give Chowan their third run of the game. Mount Olive, however, tallied 15 hits in the game and walked away with the 11-3 victory.
Capps went 2-3 at the plate and scored one run. Justin Bagbey had a team-high two RBI and also scored one run. Anthony O'Brien (4-4) suffered the loss after tossing 5.0 innings.
