Featured Hawks: Ronny Astudillo
Every Monday through Thursday for the month of July, Chowan Athletics will spotlight select student-athletes and coaches in a series called Featured Hawks. This series highlights Hawks who exemplify excellence in the classroom, in competition, and within the Chowan community. Student-athletes were selected based on their academic achievement, athletic performance, leadership, character, and overall standing with the university. Coaches have the opportunity to share their coaching journey, discuss their programs, and provide insight about their vision for the future.
Fans will learn more about the individual experiences and stories of our student-athletes and coaches at Chowan. Beginning in August, Fridays will transition to Feature Fridays, continuing the spotlight series by highlighting one individual throughout the school year each week.

Ronny Astudillo came to Chowan University during the Spring 2026 semester. A junior Criminal Justice major and member of the Chowan football offensive line, Astudillo has quickly made an impact both on the field and within the Chowan community. A native of Warrenton, Virginia, Astudillo transferred to Chowan from Bluefield State University.
In the classroom, Astudillo has demonstrated his commitment to academic excellence, earning a spot on the 2026 Conference Carolinas Presidential Honor Roll following the conclusion of the academic year, maintaining a GPA above 3.5. Despite being a recent addition to the Hawks' program, Astudillo has shown his dedication to work on the field, commitment in the classroom, and positive presence within the Chowan community.
Why did you choose Chowan University?
I was a mid year transfer this past school year. Going in, I was a little bit hesitant at first, but being introduced to the family, the culture, and my team, I found Chowan as a new second home.
How have your coaches and teammates influenced your growth as a person?
The first thing my teammates and coaches have done is break me down and help sculpt me into the man I am today. They have taught me that life is going to bring a lot of adversity, but they have helped me learn how to overcome those challenges by working hard, putting my head down, and continuing to grind.
What advice would you give to prospective students considering Chowan University?
The piece of advice I would give to new incoming students at Chowan University is to keep an open mind. Be prepared to experience new things, immerse yourself in the culture, and enjoy your time here.
