Chowan Splits Doubleheader with St. Andrews College

MURFREESBORO – Chowan University split a pair of non-conference baseball games with visiting St. Andrews College on Tuesday. The Knights captured the opener 8-4, but Chowan regrouped and took the nightcap 12-3. The Hawks now stand at 12-13 overall, while St. Andrews holds an 8-22 record.
 
Chowan committed four errors in game one, helping the Knights score eight runs. St. Andrews took a 5-0 lead after the top half of the second inning. In the home half, Ryan Moore and Colby Wiggins scored for the Hawks, closing the gap to 5-2. 
 
St. Andrews would add one run in each of the next three innings, eventually breaking open an 8-3 advantage. Blake Leebrick singled in Colby Wiggins in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 8-4, but Chowan could not generate any more runs from that point on.
 
Brett Overton and Jordan Williams each collected two hits for the Hawks. Colby Wiggins had team-highs with two runs scored and two stolen bases. Andrew Pelfrey earned the win for the Knights, pitching all seven innings and giving up four runs off eight hits.
 
Josh Barmoy suffered the loss for Chowan. He pitched 4.0 innings, allowing seven runs off eight hits. Ryan Bradshaw and John Morris combined for 3.0 innings of one-hit relief on the mound.
 
Chowan's offense found its groove early in game two as they scored five runs in the first inning. The Hawks collected eight hits in the frame and five different batters collected RBI. Chowan added one run in the second inning and two more in the third to hold an 8-0 advantage. 
 
Pitcher Anthony O'Brien would do the rest, as he held the Knights to three runs off five hits, picking up the victory. He struck out four and did not allow a walk in five innings pitched. St. Andrews scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning, but Chowan responded with one in the fifth and three in the sixth to secure the convincing win.
 
William Ward was outstanding at the plate, going 4-5 with three runs scored and one RBI. Ward also stole two bases. Brett Overton went 3-5 at the dish, scoring two runs and driving in a team-high three runs. Ryan Moore hit his second home run of the year, part of his 2-4 evening at the plate.
