Chowan Sweeps Shaw in CIAA Softball Action

MURFREESBORO – The Chowan Softball team opened the 2011 CIAA season with a pair of wins over visiting Shaw University Saturday afternoon. The Hawks used a huge third inning to win game one 16-1 in just five innings. Chowan then took the nightcap by a score of 8-2. Chowan moves to 7-9 on the season (2-0 CIAA), while Shaw falls to 1-17 on the year (0-2 CIAA).
 
Entering the bottom of the third inning in game one, the Lady Bears and Hawks were deadlocked at one run apiece. Chowan then sent 15 batters to the plate in the inning, scoring 11 runs off 8 hits. Tricia Gorman went 2-2 with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored in the inning. Allie Kolezynski and Megan Wade also scored two runs in the frame.
 
Chowan added four more runs in the home half of the fourth, leading to the convincing 16-1 victory. The game was called after four and a half innings due to the mercy rule. Allie Kolezynski, Tricia Gorman, Megan Wade, and Brooke Owen each went 2-3 from the plate. Gorman added a game-high 4 RBI. Allie Kolezynski earned the win and went the distance on the mound for the Hawks, giving up three hits and one run while striking out eight. 
 
Chowan got on the scoreboard early in game two, as Allie Kolezynski and Tricia Gorman each scored runs for the Hawks. Holding a slim 3-1 advantage, Chowan scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth to break the game open. 
 
Lacey Wildeboer pitched all seven innings, giving up three hits and two runs. She struck out four batters in the game. Fahren Munro, Tricia Gorman, and Brooke Owen each collected two hits for the Hawks. Munro also scored two runs. Gorman and Megan Wade drove in two runs for Chowan.
 
Chowan will host CIAA foe Virginia State University tomorrow in a conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 12:00pm. Shaw will host Bowie State University tomorrow in a CIAA matchup.
