MURFREESBORO – The Chowan Women's basketball team improved their record to 12-10 with a 79-49 win over visiting Lincoln University (PA) Thursday night. The Hawks are now 9-5 in the CIAA (7-1 North). The Lady Lions fall to 2-19 overall (1-13 CIAA, 1-7 North) following the loss.
On senior night, Chowan opened the game on an 8-0 run, capped by a layup and foul shot by
Ransheda Jennings at the 17:37 mark of the half. Lincoln responded with 9-3 run of their own to bring the Chowan lead down who 11-9 with 13:21 left in the stanza.
Another
Ransheda Jennings layup at the 10:23 mark extended the Hawk lead to 19-11. Cynthia Johnson of the Lady Lions nailed a jumper with 7:15 on the clock to cut their deficit to 21-17. From there, Chowan stepped up their defense and did not allow a Lincoln field goal the remainder of the half. The Lady Lions managed only three points in that span. At the half, Chowan held a 32-22 advantage.
The first half was marred by turnovers by both teams. Chowan forced 17 Lady Lion miscues while committing 12 of their own. The main difference, however, was that the Hawks capitalized off the turnovers. Chowan scored 15 points in the half off turnovers, while Lincoln only scored 2 off Chowan miscues.
In the second half, the Hawks showed why they are in first place in the CIAA North. In the first five minutes of the half, Chowan outscored Lincoln 13-5, extending their lead to 45-27. They did not stop there, though, as they went on another long run (15-2) to bring the score to 60-31 with 11:11 remaining.

Talaya Lynch three pointer at the 4:51 mark gave Chowan their largest lead of the game at 78-41. Chowan forced 24 Lady Lion turnovers for the game, scoring 23 points off the miscues. For the game, the Hawks shot 49.1% from the floor and 50.0% from three point territory. Chowan held Lincoln to only 26.8% shooting for the game.
Chowan will host Elizabeth City State University on Saturday for the final home game of the 2010-2011 season. Tip-off is set for 1:00pm in the Helms Center. Lincoln will host Bowie State University Saturday at 5:30 pm.
