Box Score HAMPTON, VA – For the first time this season, a CIAA opponent knocked off the Chowan University Volleyball team. The Hawks (25-7) were defeated by Winston-Salem State University in a five-set thriller in the final game of pool play on Friday. The Lady Rams (19-10) won by scores of 25-19, 21-25, 25-20, 21-25, 15-12.
Despite the loss, Chowan will advance to the semifinals to be played tomorrow. Chowan will take on the top seed from Pool B, the Fayetteville State University Lady Broncos, at 7:00pm. Fayetteville State also went 2-1 in pool play on Friday.
Chowan defeated the Lady Broncos 3-1 on September 17
th, in their only match-up this season.
Tori Lewis and
Monica Ruffin each totaled 15 kills for the match.
Karina Monroe added 11 kills. Lewis also had a team-high 16 digs. Ruffin recorded 14 digs and
Tara Thomalla tallied 11.
Callie Armistead had 48 assists to lead all players.
The Lady Rams recorded nine blocks, while Chowan had seven. The Hawks also committed an uncharacteristic 26 attack errors.
In tomorrow's other semifinal, Winston-Salem State will take on the Lady Falcons of Saint Augustine's College at :00pm. The winners of each semifinal match will meet for the CIAA Championship at 1:00pm on Sunday.
