FLORENCE, SC – A big second half by Antonio Reddic and
Quinton McDuffie, along with stifling pressure defense, led the Chowan University Men's Basketball team to an 80-64 victory over Coker College in the opening game of the Zaxby's Tip-Off Classic hosted by Francis Marion University.
Chowan (1-3) picked up their first win of the 2011-2012 season by forcing 30 Coker turnovers and limiting the Cobras to just 17 field goals. The Hawks scored 47 points off those turnovers. Chowan was allowing 90.7 points per game until tonight.
Reddic, who came into the game averaging 24 points per contest, tallied 26 tonight. He nearly had a double-double as he accumulated nine steals. Through four games this season, he now has 25 steals. Reddic shot 10-17 (58.8%) from the floor, and knocked down six of eight free throw attempts.
McDuffie erupted for 15 points, including 11 in the second half. He was 7-11 from the floor and brought down four rebounds in just 17 minutes of play. He is shooting over 46% from the floor this season.
James Davis (11) and
Chris Williams (10) also scored in double figures for the Hawks.
Mark McGlone recorded a team-high nine rebounds, to go along with eight points. Ten different players scored for Chowan, who never trailed in the game.
Errick Bethel led the Cobras with 15 points, including three treys. Eren Moses added 11 points.
Unlike their first three contests this season, Chowan came out of the gate strong, especially defensively. The Hawks forced four turnovers in the first six minutes of play, leading to an early 10-8 lead. Chowan then went on an 8-0 run to open up an 18-8 advantage with 8:35 remaining in the first half.
Chris Williams had four of those eight points for the Hawks.
A Reddic layup with 6:43 on the clock gave Chowan a 25-16 cushion, but the Cobras responded. Over the next 2:04, Coker scored eight straight points to cut the Hawks lead to just one. After missing 12 of their first 14 shots, Coker connected on three of their next five, including two three-pointers, to climb back in the game.
Not to be outdone, Chowan came right back with an 8-0 run of their own.
Greg Alston nailed a free throw at the 1:48 mark to give the Hawks a 33-24 lead.
Coker went the final 4:38 of the first half without a field goal. They only attempted one during that span, and committed seven turnovers. As a whole, the Cobras coughed up 17 turnovers in the half.
Chowan started the second half much like the first, forcing four turnovers in the first 4:12 of play. A 10-1 run gave Chowan a 47-33 lead with 15:47 remaining in the game. Reddic had eight of those points, which included two fast-break layups and four free throws.
Coker brought it within nine at 49-40, but could not get any closer as the Hawks came up with timely baskets and turnovers. A 9-0 run gave the Hawks their biggest lead of the game, 72-52, with 4:16 on the clock, essentially sealing the victory.
Chowan outrebounded Coker 41-27. Each team made 24 free throws. Chowan shot 45.0% from the floor, including 51.6% accuracy in the second half.
The Hawks will face host Francis Marion University tomorrow night at 8:00pm to conclude the tournament.
