Wheeling Jesuit Offense Erupts in 111-65 Win Over Chowan

JOHNSTOWN, PA – The Wheeling Jesuit University Cardinals shot an impressive 58.5% from the floor, 48.3% from three-point land, and 80.0% from the free throw line en route to a 111-65 victory over Chowan University on Saturday.  Wheeling Jesuit improves to 2-0 while the Hawks fall to 0-2 on the short season.
 
13 different players scored for the Cardinals, including four who reached double figures.  For the Hawks, Antonio Reddic continued his hot start to his Chowan career with 23 points.
 
Obi Ukwuoma led WJU with 20 points on 8 of 9 shooting.  He also grabbed eight rebounds.  Steve Catich was not far behind with 19 points, including a perfect 10-10 from the free throw line.
 
The Hawks also had four players in double figures, led by Reddic's 23.  Aaron Allen dropped 13 points, all in the second half.   Quinton McDuffie added 11 points, while James Davis tallied ten; six of which came from beyond the three-point line. 
 
WJU out-rebounded Chowan 49 to 29, leading to a 25-10 advantage in second chance points.  The Hawks won the turnover battle for the game, forcing 18 Cardinal miscues while committing just 16. 
 
Wheeling Jesuit was in control of the game from the start, racing out to an 18-2 lead just over seven minutes into the game.  A 6-0 spurt by Chowan brought the score to 35-24 with 4:22 remaining in the first half, but the Hawks could not pull any closer.
 
“They played a heck of a game today,” said Head Coach Dan DeRose.  “It seemed like anything they put up went in, while anything we put up missed.”
 
The Cardinals owned a 50-29 lead at halftime and continued to score in the second half.  In the second half, Wheeling Jesuit connected on 22 field goals.  By comparison, Chowan had 25 field goals for the game.
 
Chowan kept it within 19 after a McDuffie layup with 17:12 to go in the game, but the Cardinals went on a 15-0 run from there to put the game out of reach.
 
Chowan shot 35.2% from the floor for the game, and 12-14 from the charity stripe.  In two games thus far, the Hawks are shooting 77.4% from the free throw line.
 
Chowan will travel to Barton College on Tuesday, November 15th for a 7:30pm match-up with the Bulldogs.
