Hawks Clinch CIAA North Title, Defeat Virginia Union 3-0

Tori Lewis (6) closed out her home career with 12 kills
Box Score MURFREESBORO – The Chowan University volleyball team closed out their 2011 home schedule with a 3-0 sweep of visiting Virginia Union University on Monday.  The Hawks won by scores of 25-19, 25-16, and 25-18, clinching the CIAA Northern Division title.

With the win, the Hawks remain perfect (15-0) in CIAA play, and move to 22-6 overall.  Virginia Union falls to 8-20 overall and 7-8 in CIAA play.

“All around we did all right,” quipped Head Coach Peter Green.  “Tori (Lewis) did well on the outside and we started to move the ball around pretty well.  Virginia Union makes you play to their level by slowing it down and playing a controlled game, so it is not just hitting the ball as hard as you can.  But we adjusted and got the job done.”

Seniors Tori Lewis and Tara Thomalla played their final game in the Helms Center, and they both contributed in a big way.  Lewis, Chowan's all-time leader in kills recorded 12 more tonight.  She hit .286 and had team highs with four service aces and 11 digs.

“I think we were all a little nervous and jittery at the start, with it being senior night and the 'Dig Pink' game,” said Lewis.  “The third game we definitely came out and played better.  We are division champs, but we don't want to stop there.”

Thomalla, who leads the team in digs, had eight tonight to improve her season total to 316.  “Tonight wasn't our best game, but it's always good to get a win.  Tori was honored for her 1,000th career kill and she ended the match with a kill, so I am happy for her,” stated Thomalla after the match.

Monica Ruffin had a superb offensive game, recording 11 kills and hitting .429.  She also tallied two service aces and five digs.  Callie Armistead added 32 assists to her Chowan University record, which now stands at 2,755.

Chowan will wrap up the 2011 regular season on Friday, October 28th when they travel to CIAA rival Elizabeth City State University.  Game time is set for 6:00pm.  “I know they (Elizabeth City State) are going to come after us on Friday, so we need to be ready,” said Green.
