Hawks Remain Undefeated in CIAA Play, Sweep VSU 3-0

Tori Lewis (6) led Chowan with 11 kills
Box Score ETTRICK, VA – The Chowan University volleyball team went back to their winning ways after dismantling Virginia State University on Tuesday, 25-21, 25-15, 25-11.  Tori Lewis recorded 11 kills and Callie Armistead led the Hawks with 32 assists.  Chowan moves to 19-4 overall, and 12-0 in CIAA play, and have won 14 of their last 15 matches.

The Hawks and Lady Trojans played a tight opening game.  Neither team led by more than four points until a pair of VSU attack errors put Chowan up 18-14.  Nikira Fults crushed one of her eight kills on the final point of the game to give the Hawks a 25-21 win.

Chowan only continued to improve from there.  After another competitive start to open game two, the Hawks scored eight straight points to take a commanding 20-12 lead.  Monica Ruffin nailed two service aces, while Karina Monroe had two kills during the run.  Monroe finished the evening with eight kills and hit .333.

A pair of Virginia State errors closed the set and gave the Hawks a 2-0 advantage.  The Lady Trojans committed 15 attack errors throughout the match.

The third and final game was all Chowan.  The Hawks jumped out to a quick 13-4 lead, thanks in part to three kills by Lewis.  Chowan did not slow down from that point on, and cruised to a 25-11 win.

Ruffin led the Hawks with 12 digs, while Tara Thomalla added 10.  Chowan will travel to Lincoln University on Friday, October 14th to take on the Lady Lions at 6:00pm.
