Box Score HICKORY, NC - Lenoir-Rhyne University amassed 631 yards of total offense in a 59-10 win over Chowan University this evening in non-conference gridiron action. The Bears had two running backs record 100-plus yards in the game while the team rushed for a combined 513 yards. The Hawks were held to 164 yards of total offense in the game, with 95 yards coming in the air and 69 yards on the ground. Chowan falls to 0-1 on the year and will travel to The Citadel for a 1:00pm kick off next Saturday.
Lenoir-Rhyne got on top of Chowan early in the game after scoring on their first two possessions. The Bears held the Hawks out of the endzone for much of the first half but Chowan finally got on the board at the 7:22 mark of the second quarter when
Joey Gargiulo connected on a 32 yard field goal, capping off a 51 yard drive.
Tony Goodman returned a kickoff for 85 yards on the Hawks next possession to give the Hawks their second and final score of the game. They trailed 42-10 at the half and never could get their offense going in the right direction to knock on the door in the second half. The Bears went on to take the game with a final of 59-10.
Elliot Smalls gained 62 yards on the ground on 12 carries to lead Chowan's ground game. Eddie Coard caught four passes for 49 yards.
Ryan Simpson was completed six passes on 11 attempts for 72 yards with an interception.
Gatlin Williams led the defense with 11 tackles while
Jason Ampy had nine tackles.
Brandon Harris tallied eight tackles and had an interception in the game.
