Five Hawks Named to CIAA All Rookie Football Team

CU Football put five players on CIAA All Rookie Team

HAMPTON, VA – The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association released today the 2010 All CIAA Rookie Team for football with players representing ten different CIAA institutions. Winston-Salem State University's Tehvyn Brantley (Durham, NC) and Shaw University's Darnell Evans (Madison, NJ) headline this year's team as Offensive and Defensive Rookies of the Year respectively. The team is voted on annually by the CIAA Sports Information Director's Association. Chowan put five players on this year's team, one from the offensive side of the ball and four from the defensive side.  

Ryan Simpson made a name for himself this season as the third string quarterback. After serving the first part of the season as a tailback in the Hawks system, Simpson came after the team's top two QB's suffered season ending injuries. He led the Hawks to back-to-back victories over Lincoln and Saint Pauls. He ended the season with 1,036 yards, six passing touchdowns, three rushing touchdowns, and 103.6 passing yards per game. He was named HSRN's National DII Player of the Week after leading the team to road win over Saint Pauls. 

Jason Ampy led the defensive unit in tackles this season with 49 total tackles. From the linebacker position Ampy posted 33 solo tackles and 16 assisted tackles. He also tallied two quarterback hurries, two forced fumbles, and had a fumble recovery. Ampy led the team in tackles three times this season. 

Anthony Hooks was named to the team at defensive back after getting 39 season tackles, five interceptions, and three pass break ups. Hooks is currently ranked second in the CIAA in interceptions and had back-to-back games with two picks. He was named CIAA Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week this season. 

Marc McCadden was named to All Rookie Team after lead the defensive line in tackles this season with 38. He had six sacks this season and 10 tackles for a loss. He was named CIAA Rookie of the Week after leading the defensive unit in tackles against Winston-Salem State University. 

Gatlin Williams anchored a linebacker position all season for Chowan where he tallied 44 season tackles, second best on the team. Williams had 25 solo tackles this season, one tackle for a loss, one sack, and a quarterback hurry.

Brantley was voted as the CIAA Offensive Rookie of the Year after holding down a starting wide receiver position for the Rams this season. Brantley caught 38 passes for 608 yards and five touchdowns this season. He ranks 4th in the CIAA in total receiving yards (608) and 5th in the CIAA in receptions per game (4.2). Brantley had a season-high eight receptions for 143 yards in a win over Johnson C. Smith and 166 yards receiving with two touchdowns in a win over North Carolina Central University this season.

Evans held down starting defensive back position for the CIAA Southern Division Champions, Shaw University. Evans collected 34 tackles this season with 22 solo tackles and 12 assisted tackles. He currently leads the CIAA in passes defended (17) and pass break ups (10). He also has six season interceptions, tied for first in the CIAA. He led the CIAA in interceptions most of the 2010 season.
