HAMPTON, VA – The Chowan University Hawks opened the CIAA Volleyball Championships with a 3-0 win over Winston-Salem State University in the early match of the day. The Hawks put down kills at a .359 clip while also out hitting the Lady Rams 37 to 33 in the match. Chowan got double digit kills from Victoria Lewis who ended the match with 11 kills. For WSSU, Ashley Harris also tallied a team-high 11 kills.
The two teams battled in the first set but it was Chowan who pulled away with the 25-23 win, despite the Lady Rams putting up 18 kills to Chowan's 14. The Hawks picked up the momentum to roll to 25-15 and 25-11 second and third set wins.
WSSU's Kiara Brown set up 23 assists and Mia McBroom and Adrianne Alexander each added six kills.
For Chowan Karina Monroe had seven kills and Callie Armistead ended the match with 27 assists.
#2 Chowan will play #4 Virginia Union at 1:00pm in their next match. #3 Winston-Salem State will play #1 Saint Augustine's College at 3:00pm in their next outing.
