Chowan Hangs on to Edge North Georgia

CU's Christian Um Kaman scored 20 points in tonight's win
Box Score MOUNT OLIVE, NC - The Chowan University men's basketball team picked up their first win of the new season after coming from behind to beat North Georgia State College and University 65-63. The tightly fought game featured 13 ties and nine lead changes over two periods of play. Chowan put three players in double figures, led by newcomer Christian Um Kaman who dropped 20 points and hauled in seven boards in the win. Chowan improves their overall record to 1-2 on the year after tonight's win. 

The first half featured eight ties and both teams took 29 points into the halftime break. The battle continued through the second half but a late surge by the Hawks led them to the win. Trailing by five with 5:54 to play in the game, the Hawks scored six straight points on back-to-back lay ups by Um Kaman and Charles Rhodes. Mark McGlone added two free throws to give Chowan a 59-58 lead with just under four minutes to play in the game. North Georgia converted a lay up and hit 1-2 from the foul line to take a 61-59 lead with 3:42 to play in the game. Aaron Allen hit two late lay ups and Um Kaman connected on another free throw to give Chowan a 64-61 lead with 2:00 to play. North Georgia scored on another lay up but Mark Brown went to the line and hit 1-2 to ice the game for Chowan at 65-63. 

Chowan connected on 45% of their shots taken tonight and grabbed 30 team rebounds. NGSCU hit shots from the floor at a 47% clip and won the battle of the boards with 35 rebounds. 

For Chowan, Um Kaman posted 20 points while Brown and Rhodes each contributed 12 points. Mark McGlone dished out five assists and had seven rebounds in the win. 

Brown was named to the All-Pickle Classic Team after posting 31 points over two games.

Chowan will take off until November 27th when they host Holy Family University in a non-conference game. That tip is set for 2:00pm in the Helms Center.
