Hawks Do Battle with Old Dominion but Fall 36-21

Box Score NORFOLK - In a highly anticipated match up with the Monarchs from Old Dominion tonight at SB Ballard Stadium the Chowan Hawks showed signs of greatness and signs of a young football program still learning the system. The Hawks fell in the game 36-21 but compiled 341 yards of total offense. Senior quarterback CJ Westler threw for 293 yards on 27 completions but the Hawks ground game tallied just 19 yards in the game. Despite the ending the football team made history with the Monarchs tonight as the first opponent in nearly 70 years.

Old Dominion got up quickly 13-0 on the Hawks before could answer. Westler hit Eric Benton from 37 yards out at the 6:00 mark of the first quarter to get Chowan on the board. The Monarchs blocked Cory Cline's extra point to make the score 13-6. Cline made good on a 35 yard field goal at the start of the second quarter to cut the game to 16-6. After another ODU field goal, JJ Spates capped off a 12 play, 60-yard drive with a six-yard touchdown run to pull the Hawks within four points at 19-15.

ODU took a 29-15 lead into halftime and kept Chowan off the board until the fourth quarter when Westler rushed in a score from one yard out. Cline's extra point was blocked again, but it gave the Hawks 21 points. It was still too much to recover from as the Hawks fell with a final score of 36-21.

Westler ended the game with 293 yards on 27 completions with three interceptions. He hit Kevin Robledo 10 times for 96 yards tonight while Elliot Smalls had five catches for 44 yards and Kevin Hodrick hauled in five passes for 42 yards.

Defensively Brendon Scott tallied seven tackles while Richard Schott had six tackles in his first college game.

The Hawks, now 0-2, will travel to Brevard College next Saturday for a 2:00pm kick off.
