MURFREESBORO - The volleyball team opened the 2009 season with two wins in the Janet Collins Invitational. The Hawks picked up straight sets wins over Virginia Union University and Allen University to head into day two with a 2-0 record. St. Andrews will also enter day two at 2-0 while Lincoln and Allen both come in at 0-1. Virginia Union finished up 0-2 tonight.
The Hawks picked up a straight sets victory of CIAA opponent Virginia Union with final game scores of 25-10, 25-14, and 25-12. The Hawks tallied 26 team kills. Leading the way for Chowan was
Antoinette McCollough who had 8 kills and five aces.
Karina Monroe added 7 kills and
Victoria Lewis tallied 6 kills in the win.
Callie Armistead had 19 assists while
Desaray Turner added 9 service aces.
Chowan picked their second match win over Allen University with final match scores of 25-6, 25-10, and 25-11. Lewis and Monroe had 9 kills each while Lewis also had 9 service aces. McCollough added 8 kills while Turned had 7 kills and 3 service aces.
Chowan's first match will be at 11:00am tomorrow morning againt St. Andrews. Tournament play will begin at 9:00am.
