Salisbury Wins In OT Over Braves

Box Score MURFREESBORO - Homecoming 2001 ended with the Braves dropping their second game in a row to Salisbury in an overtime shoot-out this afternoon. The Braves fell to 1-4 on the season after the loss. The Braves started the game strong taking a 7-0 lead in the first quarter when QB Chris Stodghill escaped Salisbury defenders and hit TE Bill Eckle in the endzone from 20 yards out (Janney PAT good). Chowan would again score to lead 14-0 when Stodghill hooked up with WR Russell Dudley for a diving catch from 15 yards out (Janney PAT good). Salisbury struck back in the third quarter when Tony Ellis rushed from 2 yards out to get Salisbury on the scoreboard (Jacko PAT good). The Braves got the ball back with 2:12 to go in the half and marched downfield for another score. On the run Stoghill laid one up for WR Brian Harvell with 00:37 to go in the half. The Braves took a 21-7 lead into halftime. In the second half, the Braves would strike on their first possession when TB Jawarren Cowles rushed one in on the sweep from 20 yards out to make the score 28-7 (Janney PAT good). The Braves defense struggled to contain the option in the second half, giving up three consecutive scores to the Seagulls to tie the game at 28 apiece. With 9:25 left to go in the fourth, the Braves drove the ball 82 yards down field for the go-ahead score capitalized by Stodghill hitting WR Jimmy Sterling from ten yards out (Janney PAT good). With 2:14 seconds remaining in the game, Salisbury's Tony Ellis rushed the ball in from 22 yards out to tie the game at 35-35. In the overtime shootout, the Seagulls would get the first possession. On the second play from scrimmage Ellis again rushed past Chowan defenders to take the lead 42-35 (Jacko PAT good). The Braves got their chance to put the ball in the endzone but fell short when Stodghill fumbled the ball on the second play in the series. The Seagulls would take the victory over Chowan with a final score of 42-35. The Braves amassed 378 total yards of offense while the Seagulls totaled 300 yards, 217 of which were on the ground. In the game QB Chris Stodghill was 18-24 for 201 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions. TB Jawarren Cowles rushed for 122 yards on 31 carries with 1 TD. Brian Harvell had two catches for 78 yards and 1 TD. Russell Dudley had 3 catches for 29 yards and 1 TD. Bill Eckle had 3 catches for 21 yards and 1 TD. Linebacker Terrance Saxby had 15 tackles, 3 for a loss of 8 yards. Freshman Stephen Pettis had 9 tackles, 2 tackles for a loss of 11 yards, and 1 quarterback sack for a loss of 9 yards.
