Braves Look For Fifth Straight Win

The Chowan Braves will be looking for their fifth straight victory, dating back to last season, when they play host to the Newport News Apprentice School on Saturday, September 25th....The game is slated for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff at James G. Garrison Stadium in Murfreesboro....Chowan is coming off an unexpected off week, as Hurricane Floyd forced the postponement of their game at Jacksonville University....In thier last outing, Chowan scored 22 fourth quarter points to come from behind and defeat Greensboro, 35-28....In that game, Lamont Boone rushed for 70 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Braves.

The Builders, under the direction of second-year head coach Aubrey Kelly, are coming off a 63-7 loss at the hands of Catholic University....In that game, Newport News took a 7-0 lead on the opening kickoff when Daryl Jones picked up a fumble and returned it 26 yards into the end zone....Catholic limited the Builders to just 122 yards of total offense.

THE SERIES

The Braves and Builders are meeting for the seventh time on the gridiron Saturday afternoon....Last season the Braves defeated the Builders, 36-6, at Apprentice Field in Newport News, VA....In that game, the Braves amassed 324 yards of total offense led by Lamont Boone's 93 yards rushing and one touchdown....Chris Dent completed 7 of 14 passes for 116 yards and two touchdowns....The Braves held the Builders to 62 yards of total offense, including -9 yards rushing....Charles Broce led the Builders, completing 7 of 13 passes for 71 yards....The Braves and Builders met for the first time in 1993, with the Builders winning, 47-13....Chowan leads the all-time series 3-2-1.

CHOWAN HEAD COACH STEVE LEE

Currently in his second season at the helm of the Braves program and his second season as a head coach, Lee led the Braves to a 5-5 overall record in 1998, their first non-losing mark as a four-year institution....Lee earned his first career coaching victory by directing the Braves to a 41-28 victory over Greensboro on September 12, 1998 in Greensboro, NC....Lee also serves as Chowan's director of athletics....Prior to being named head coach, Lee served as the Braves defensive coordinator for two seasons....The Braves third head coach in eight years, Lee landed in Braves Country from Waynesburg (PA) College, where he served as associate head coach and offensive coordinator....During his eight-year stint, the Yellow Jackets were nationally ranked several times....Lee has also served as an assistant coach at Fairmont State (1984-86) and Lock Haven University (1977-78)....Lee was the head football coach at University High School in West Virginia from 1979 to 1983....Lee is a 1978 graduate of Lock Haven University and earned his master's degree from West Virginia University in 1986....Lee's son, Mark, is a football graduate assistant at WVU.

ABOUT APPRENTICE

Under second-year head coach Aubrey Kelly, Apprentice enters the game with a record of 0-3....Gerald Corallo and Sinque Holmes return to lead the Newport News ground game....Corallo rushed for 328 yards and two touchdowns in 1998, while Holmes finished with 255 yards and one score....The Builders also return their top two receivers from a year ago in Ramon Jones (23 catches, 285 yards, one TD) and Jermaine Marrow (17 catches, 237 yards, one TD)....Defensively, the Builders are led by DB Bryean Hargrove....Hargrove was second on the team in tackles a year ago with 46.

JONES DOES IT ALL

One week after being named d3football.com's national linebacker of the week for his performance in Chowan's 25-14 win over Methodist, junior LB Keith Jones continued his torture of opponents.... Jones was all over the field against Greensboro, making 11 tackles (seven solo)....He also forced a fumble, recovered a fumble and recorded two sacks.

BOONE RACKS UP HONORS

For his performance in the Braves 35-28 win over Greensboro, sophomore RB Lamont Boone was named the ACFC's Offensive Player of the Week for the second straight week....Boone carried the ball 19 times for 70 yards and three touchdowns and added five catches for 52 yards....Boone is currently 27th in the nation in rushing, averaging 119.5 yards per game.

BRAVES CONTINUE RECORD BREAKING WAYS

Lamont Boone's 83-yard run against Methodist lasted one week as Chowan's all-time longest play from scrimmage....Tim Mitchell's 86-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Forbes against Greensboro is now the longest play from scrimmage in Chowan history....The pass play also broke the Chowan record for longest pass and the ACFC record for longest play from scrimmage and longest pass play.
