Braves Fall To No. 17 Frostburg State, 30-25

Box Score

Despite coming out on the short end of a 30-25 loss at 17th ranked Frostburg State, Chowan now knows just how close they are to being mentioned with the top teams in the South Region.

Chowan (3-1, 2-1 ACFC) gave Frostburg (4-0, 2-0) all they bargained for, but as you would expect from a team that wasn't accustomed to being in a game of this magnitude, the Braves made a few crucial mistakes. Chowan outgained the Bobcats 373-321, including 210-135 on the ground, but costly turnovers and a few missed opportunities were the difference.

After trading field goals to open the game, including a career-high and school record 44-yarder for the Braves Justin Trout, Billy Jackson found Greg Cooper from 30 yards out and the Bobcats led 10-3. But, with 11:18 left in the first half, the momentum began to shift. The Braves defense forced the Bobcats to go three-and-out on their next three possessions, holding them to a combined minus-7 yards. Meanwhile, Trout connected again, this time from 42 yards out, and the Braves trailed 10-6 at the half.

On Frostburg's first possession of the second half, the defense held again, forcing Frostburg to punt. Tim Loss hit a wobbler that came down to Danny Inscoe who mishandled it at the Chowan 40 yardline. The Bobcats recovered the fumble and six plays later, DeNelle Hale took it in from six yards out to extend the Bobcat lead to 17-6. After the Braves offense stalled again, Frostburg increased their lead to 24-6 on a 10-play, 80-yard drive that culminated on a Jason Henry to Copper connection from 25 yards out.

Late in the third quarter, the Braves offense came alive. Doug Leary and Devin Vincent (six catches for 103 yards and two touchdowns) hooked up on a 47-yard score and the Braves trailed 24-12. The Bobcats answered on the next drive when Henry scored on a five-yard keeper to stake Frostburg to a 30-12 lead. On their next possession, Leary led Chowan on 12-play, 75-yard scoring drive. The 4:47 drive was capped by another Leary to Vincent hook-up, this one from eight yards out as the Braves pulled to within 30-19.
