Sea Gulls Edge Braves With 57 Seconds Left

Box Score

Bryan Driskell found Thomas Browne in the back of the end zone from 31 yards out with 57 seconds left in the game, as the Sea Gulls (2-3, 2-1 ACFC) edged the Braves (3-2, 2-2), 31-27.

The Sea Gulls, who got a career-best 245 rushing yards and two touchdowns from Myron Dent, jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter. On the Braves' first play from scrimmage, quarterback Doug Leary fumbled the snap and the ball was recovered by Salisbury's Chris Morandi at the Chowan 19.

Four plays later, Dent scampered four yards for the score. Paul Jacko added a 41-yard field goal on the Sea Gulls next possession, and they led 10-0.

The Braves finally got on the board with two minutes left in the first half when Doug Leary found Devin Vincent streaking down the sideline for a 49-yard touchdown. Chowan pulled ahead 17-10 when they scored on their final drives of the first half, the first coming on a five-yard run from Jawarren Cowles. After a Dent fumble was recovered by the Braves Keith Jones at the Salisbury 31, Justin Trout booted a 32-yard field goal with no time left in the first half.

Trout added another field goal, this one from 36 yards, as the Braves increased their lead to 20-10. The Sea Gulls and Braves then traded touchdowns on their next drives, Dent scoring from 20 yards out and the Braves' Cowles scoring on a 44-yard run.

Trailing 27-17 at the start of the fourth quarter, the Gulls pulled to within three when Jamal Avery ran it in from five yards out. The Braves then went on an eight minute drive which stalled on the Sea Gull 19 when Trout missed a 29-yard field goal wide left. The defense answered however, when Terrance Saxby intercepted Driskell at the Salisbury 36.

With 3:55 remaining in the game and the ball at the Gull 36, Chowan appeared to have the game in hand. That changed quickly however, as Timmy Carter's halfback pass was picked off by Du'Juan Wilson at the 19. Nine plays later, Driskell hit Browne, Jacko added the point after, and the game was over.

Carter rushed for 116 yards, while Cowles, a freshman seeing his first meaningful action of the year, added 73 yards and two touchdowns. Leary completed six of 12 passes for 140 yards and one touchdown.
