MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan University volleyball team battled past the University of Mount Olive in a five-set matchup on Wednesday evening at Bob Burke Court. After dropping the first set, the Hawks responded by taking the second and final two frames to secure the 3-2 victory and improve to 2-0 in divisional play.
The Trojans claimed a tightly contested opening set, 25-22, before Chowan answered with a 25-23 victory in the second to even the match. Mount Olive regained the advantage with a 25-20 win in the third, putting the Hawks in a must-win situation heading into the fourth.
Chowan responded with one of its strongest stretches of the night, taking the fourth set 25-21 to force a fifth. The Hawks carried that momentum into the final set, jumping ahead early and controlling the set on the way to a 15-7 victory.
Alanna Verme led the Hawks offensively, tying her career high with 13 kills, while Andrea Krgovic directed the offense with a career-high 50 assists. Four Hawks finished with double-digit kills in the win.

Verme paced the Hawks with 13 kills, matching her career high, while adding eight digs, two block assists and a service ace. Krgovic turned in a career performance with 50 assists while adding nine digs and three service aces.
Jada Caruthers and Madison Henderson each recorded 12 kills. Caruthers completed the double-double with 11 digs while adding three service aces and two blocks. Henderson also contributed two blocks.
Alexa Fricker recorded a double-double of her own with 10 kills and 12 digs while adding a service ace and a block. Rosa Lynn Collier chipped in nine kills, one dig and a block.
Defensively, Anna Holcombe led the Hawks with 33 digs while also contributing two service aces.
