Featured Hawks: Joseph Lezeau II
Every Monday through Thursday for the month of July, Chowan Athletics will spotlight select student-athletes and coaches in a series called Featured Hawks. This series highlights Hawks who exemplify excellence in the classroom, in competition, and within the Chowan community. Student-athletes were selected based on their academic achievement, athletic performance, leadership, character, and overall standing with the university. Coaches have the opportunity to share their coaching journey, discuss their programs, and provide insight about their vision for the future.
Fans will learn more about the individual experiences and stories of our student-athletes and coaches at Chowan. Beginning in August, Fridays will transition to Feature Fridays, continuing the spotlight series by highlighting one individual throughout the school year each week.

Joseph Lezeau II is a senior Sport Management major and a member of the Chowan men's basketball team. A native of Port Saint Lucie, Florida, Joseph had a standout season for the Hawks, recording a career-high 25 points against UNC Pembroke while serving as a key contributor as a scorer, rebounder, and defender.
Off the court, Joseph has demonstrated the same level of excellence in the classroom over the years. By the end of this school year he earned Dean's List recognition, was named a College Sports Communicators Academic All-District selection, received the Amy Rozmus Hammond Sports Sciences Scholarship, and was inducted into the 11th class of Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Honor Society for athletes.
Joseph was also named to the 2025-26 Conference Carolinas Fall and Spring Presidential Honor Roll and earned Conference Carolinas Winter and Spring Academic All-Conference honors, further highlighting his commitment to excellence both on the court and in the classroom.
What accomplishment are you most proud of during your time at Chowan?
My greatest accomplishment at Chowan had to be scoring my first collegiate basket. I shot a three off the right wing in the second half against Tusculum. It was great. My teammates were happy for me, and it was a huge relief seeing my first basket go through the net. My family was there to see it, so it was great.
Who has had the greatest impact on your journey at Chowan, and why?
The person who has had the greatest impact on me has to be Coach Burke. Seeing him every day pushes me to be my best. He makes sure I'm in the training room getting treatment on my body, makes sure I'm in the gym getting up extra shots, and makes sure I'm doing what I have to do in the classroom. He's constantly in my ear telling me to be better because he sees it in me, even on the days I don't feel like it. He's still in my ear telling me that I have to do this just to be better than the competition and separate myself. So, he's definitely had the biggest impact.
What have you learned during your time at Chowan that you will carry with you after graduation?
Definitely run your own race. Success looks different in everybody's book. Every day, just get a little bit better. One percent every day is all you need. If you constantly get better by one percent every day, then the success is going to come. So just be patient, keep working, keep my head down, stay focused, and just run your own race.
