July Featured Staff Spotlight: Larry Carter, Chowan Hawks Super Fan

Every Monday through Thursday for the month of July, Chowan Athletics will spotlight select student-athletes and coaches in a series called Featured Hawks. This series highlights Hawks who exemplify excellence in the classroom, in competition, and within the Chowan community. Student-athletes were selected based on their academic achievement, athletic performance, leadership, character, and overall standing with the university. Coaches have the opportunity to share their coaching journey, discuss their programs, and provide insight about their vision for the future.

Fans will learn more about the individual experiences and stories of our student-athletes and coaches at Chowan. Beginning in August, Fridays will transition to Feature Fridays, continuing the spotlight series by highlighting one individual throughout the school year each week.

If you would like to be a part of the Featured Hawks as a current or former student-athlete or staff member, email gocuhawks@chowan.edu today!

Tell us a little bit about how you have been involved with Chowan Athletics.

I grew up here in Murfreesboro and I became a fan of Chowan about 40 years ago. I enjoy all of the sports here. I saw my first basketball game at Chowan in the Hawks Nest, which is now the student center, back in the 1960's. Of course, it was a junior college then, but I still remember players and coaches from those days and I still have contact with some of the ones I met. Over time, Chowan has really grown.

What has that growth been like for you as a community member?

Growth has meant that a lot more fans are coming to games, and the school is taking advantage of all of the space that is available. It's nice to have coaches that recruit local talent because then a lot of local families and fans can really support what we have going on here. Growing up, two local guys used to take me to baseball games and over the years, baseball has become my favorite sport. The Murfreesboro Recreation Department used to run all of their games on Chowan's campus. In fact, my son played t-ball right here in the Hawkins Field Outfield.

Many Chowan coaches have storied histories here on this campus and many have impacted your life. Talk with us about that.

My son came to all of Coach Burke's basketball camps growing up. He was a real character and we enjoyed him so much. Of course, I loved Coach Garrison. Coach Surface, Coach Collins, Coach Hawkins. All of these coaches are people that made a name here in the University and in this town. I used to pick up Coach Hawkins and bring him to the games here after he retired. We had our own special seats.

In 2025 you were inducted into the Chowan University "Jim Garrison" Sports Hall of Fame. What's it like to be a part of Chowan's Hall of Fame as Chowan's All-Time Fan?

It's a great honor. When you walk down the hall here, and you see your plague up along with all the Chowan legends, its an honor to be associated with people like that.

You are often in the community promoting Chowan sports to anyone who will listen. What are you telling those people?

Come up here! Meet the number one Chowan fan! All jokes aside, Chowan has a lot to offer. There are a lot of great sports teams, the community can see how Chowan impacts them on many levels. From visiting teams to high school bands and elementary schools, it really does give them all an opportunity to see what it's like in a college environment. The staff and the student-athletes are friendly here, and are welcoming. They talk with you. We all have a good time together. I tell them to join the Brave Hawks Club and be a part of it all.
