Hawks Have Banner Day to Wrap up Home Regular Season

MURFREESBORO, N.C. - The Chowan University softball team ran their overall record to 28-17 after sweeping Converse University in a Sunday afternoon doubleheader. The Hawks celebrated Senior Day for Seniors Morgan Baccus, Haileigh Boone, Lenita Bryson, Kendyl Elliot, Kyra Helton, Kendyl Hopkins, Hannah Moseley, Abbey Rutledge, Saige Roughton, and Hope Soria

Mackenzi Curry tossed a gem of a game in the opening game. She allowed just two hits in the shut out win and also accounted for all four runs the Hawks scored with a four RBI plate performance. In game two, Curry came in to close the game out, picking up the win and marking the 11th win of the season for the pitcher. 

Chowan posted a 16-4 home season record this year, capped off by winning their last 12 out of 14 games. Junior infielder Ava Mizell broke the single-season stolen base record in game two by swiping her 43 base of the season. She broke a record previously held by Faren Munro since 2011.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE 

Game One

Curry broke the scoring open for the Hawks in game one with a two-run single, scoring Helton and Soria. She knocked in Soria and Mizell in the bottom of the 5th with a single back up the middle to run the Hawks lead to 4-0 through five innings. Curry went to town on the mound, holding Converse to two hits through seven innings. Curry rolled to her 10th win of the season. Bryson, Mizelle, Soria, and Alexis Denham all accounted for a hit in the game one win. 

Game Two 

The Hawks had to do some work in game two to get their 16th conference win of the year. Trailing 3-0 through four innings, the Hawks plated 8 runs in their final two at-bats to pick up the 8-4 come-from-behind win. Chowan Calliope James singled to right field to score Denham from second base to get the Hawks on the board in the 5th inning. Soria laid down a beautiful bunt single, plating two more Hawks' runs and tying the game at 3-3. Chowan exploded for five more runs in their next at-bat, highlighted by a bases loaded single to right field by Bryson. With the bases loaded again, Hydee Kugler cleared them with one swing and a line drive triple to right field, spreading the Hawks lead to 7-3. Mizell singled in the next at-bat to score Kugler and ice the game for the Hawks. 

Emily Fowler started the game and was relieved by Abby Rutledge. Callie Tyndall pitched a solid 1.2 innings, giving up just two hits and allowing no runs. Curry closed the game out for the win, throwing 1.2 innings. 

UP NEXT

The Hawks will travel to the University of Mount Olive on Saturday, April 18th in their final regular season doubleheader of the year.
