Chowan Sweeps Shorter in Doubleheader Behind Strong Pitching and Offensive Production

ROME, GA. - The Chowan University softball team earned a sweep over Shorter University, defeating the Hawks 4-1 in game one and 8-3 in game two on Friday afternoon. Makenzi Curry set the tone early with a complete-game performance in the opener, allowing just one run, before Kaitlyn Springle powered the offense in game two with a three-run home run in the fifth inning and an RBI double in the sixth to help secure the decisive win.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE 

Game One
Chowan struck first in the top of the second inning as Curry came around to score on a Lenita Bryson single. Alexis Denham followed with a run of her own after Springle lifted a sacrifice fly to left field for an RBI. Shorter answered with a run in the fourth, but the Chowan Hawks added another run in the seventh. Ava Mizell doubled to left field to bring in Springle, and later crossed the plate herself on a single by Kyra Helton.

Mizell and Springle each recorded a hit, a run, and an RBI, while Curry added a hit and a run. Bryson and Helton both tallied a hit and an RBI, and Denham chipped in a run.

Curry went the distance in the circle, allowing just six hits and one run over seven innings while striking out four in a 26-batter outing to pick up the win and improve to 5-5 on the season.

Game Two
Chowan came out even stronger in game two, scoring two runs in the first inning as Mizell crossed the plate on a Curry single and Helton scored on a base hit by Springle. The Hawks added three more runs in the third inning, highlighted by Springle's home run to left field that plated Curry and Helton.

Springle stayed hot at the plate, doubling in the fifth to score Ryleigh Gough before later coming around to score. Helton added another run later in the contest off a Springle single to cap the scoring.

Springle led the way with four hits, two runs, and six RBI. Helton added two hits and three runs, while Curry recorded three hits and a run. Mizell contributed a hit and a run, and Hope Soria, Morgan Baccus, and Julianna Kellogg each added a hit.

Emily Fowler earned the win after pitching 5.0 innings in the circle, with Abby Rutledge coming in to close out the game in relief.

UP NEXT 

The Hawks will face Young Harris College in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 20, with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and game two set to follow at 3:00 PM.
