MURFREESBORO, N.C. - The Chowan University softball team earned a split against Virginia Union University on Wednesday afternoon as pitcher Abby Rutledge recorded her 100th career strikeout as a Hawk in game one. Chowan would bounce back in game two to secure a decisive 10-2 victory. With the results Chowan moves to 14-13 overall.

Game One
Ava Mizell accounted for the Hawks' first two runs of the game, scoring in the opening inning and again in the bottom of the fifth following a single to left field by Kyra Helton. Hope Soria added the final run of the contest, capitalizing on a throwing error. Mizell finished with two hits and two runs, while Lenita Bryson, Hydee Kugler, and Helton each recorded a hit.
Makenzi Curry got the start in the circle before Rutledge came in to toss 6.2 innings, allowing five hits and just one run while striking out seven.
Game Two
Chowan regrouped in game two, jumping out to an early lead with runs in the first, second, and third innings before adding a final run in the fourth. Helton's single helped set up Mizell for the first run, while Soria and Helton later crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Mizell doubled in the second to bring home Blair Elliot and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Soria.
Springle and Tyndall added runs on sacrifice flies from Elliot and Mizell, while Calliope James scored on a Soria single to left center in the third. Emily Fowler came around to score the final run in the fourth on a wild pitch after James drew a walk.
Mizell led the way with two hits, two runs, and three RBI. Julianna Kellogg, Soria, and Tyndall each added two hits and a run, with Soria driving in two RBI. Helton recorded a hit, run, and RBI, while James added a hit and a run. Springle and Fowler also scored for the Hawks.
Fowler earned the win in the circle, pitching all five innings while allowing just two runs and striking out six across 20 batters faced.

The Hawks travel to Rome, Georgia to take on Conference Carolinas opponent Shorter University in a doubleheader on Friday, March 20. First pitch is set for 12:00 PM, with game two scheduled to follow at 2:00 PM.
