PEMBROKE, N.C. - The Chowan University baseball team opened a three-game road series against #23 UNC Pembroke on Friday afternoon at Sammy Cox Field. The Hawks saw six different players cross the plate in the contest, highlighted by a home run to left field from KJ Durand Jr., but UNC Pembroke pulled away late to secure the series-opening victory.

UNC Pembroke struck first, plating two runs in the opening inning. Chowan responded in the top of the third, scoring two runs to even the game at 2-2. The Braves regained the lead in the bottom of the third with a run before adding three more in the fourth inning to extend the advantage. The Hawks answered with a four-run fifth inning. UNC Pembroke added two more runs later in the game while both teams were held scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings. The Braves then had a six-run eighth inning before closing out the contest in the ninth.
Ethan M. Robinson and Payton Clay scored the first runs for the Hawks after a fielding error allowed runners to advance. KJ Durand Jr. later connected on a home run to left field in the fifth inning to drive in a run. Nick Reiss, Jordan Turner, and Clay each added an RBI in the same inning as Chowan produced four runs in the frame.
Durand finished the game with a hit, a home run, and an RBI. Turner recorded three hits and drove in a run while improving to an impressive .477 batting average on the season. Robinson tallied two hits along with a run and an RBI, while Clay finished with a hit, two runs scored, and an RBI. Reiss added a run and a hit, while Collin Gifford collected two hits and Jacob Ellenburg also recorded a hit.
Josh Tripp started on the mound for the Hawks, pitching 3.0 innings. Kelton Taylor entered in relief and tossed 2.0 innings while taking the loss. Cody Ives added 2.1 innings of relief before Landon Tyndall closed out the pitching rotation with the final 0.2 innings.
