MURFREESBORO, N.C.- The Chowan University men's and women's basketball teams hosted the play-in round of the Conference Carolinas Basketball Championships on Sunday, March 1, inside the Hawks Athletic Center.
On the women's side, No. 7 seed Young Harris College squared off against No. 12 seed University of Mount Olive to determine Monday's opponent for the Hawks. Young Harris secured a 50-48 victory, fending off a second-half rally from Mount Olive and converting two free throws in the final 10 seconds to break a tie and advance.
The Chowan women, entering the tournament as the No. 6 seed, will host Young Harris on Monday, March 2, at 5:00 p.m. The winner will move on to the quarterfinal round on Friday.
On the men's side, No. 8 seed Southern Wesleyan University faced No. 11 seed Francis Marion University for the opportunity to challenge the Hawks. Southern Wesleyan built momentum midway through the second half, stretching its lead to 81-69 following a 12-3 run. Francis Marion answered with a 10-2 surge to trim the deficit to 83-79 with three minutes remaining, but the Warriors held on for a 96-93 victory to advance.
The Chowan men will now host Southern Wesleyan on Monday at 7:00 p.m., with the winner earning a spot in Friday's quarterfinals.
