CU Softball Opens Season with Win Over Felician, Finishes UNCP Invitational 1-1

PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Chowan University softball team opened the 2026 season with a strong showing on Saturday afternoon, earning a 4-2 victory over Felician before closing the day against Kutztown. The Hawks set the tone early in game one, building a four-run advantage behind timely hitting and steady pitching, and held off a late push from the Golden Falcons to secure the program's first win of the year. 

In game two, Chowan battled throughout the second contest but would come up short against the Golden Bears. With the split, the Hawks begin the year at 1-1 overall.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

The Hawks produced seven hits in game one against Felician with contributions throughout the lineup. Kyra Helton sparked the offense with a hit, RBI, and stolen base, while Kaitlyn Springle added a double and RBI to highlight a three-run fourth inning. Mackenzie Curry paced Chowan at the plate with two hits, including a double and RBI. Curry went to work on the mound after her squad established an early lead to earn the win. She tossed 6 strong innings, including five shutout innings. She also recorded two strikeouts in the game. Abby Rutledge relieved Curry in the bottom of the 7th to secure a save and help ice the season opening win for the Hawks. Offensively, Ava Mizell recorded a hit and scored a run while catcher Lenita Bryson recorded an RBI and scored a run in the win. 

In game two against Kutztown, the Hawks were held to four hits as a team.  Helton, Springle, Julianna Kellogg, and Alexis Denham sprayed four hits for the Hawks over seven innings of play. Denham grabbed the Hawks' only extra base hit of the game with a double in the top of the 3rd inning. Emily Fowler was credited with the loss on the mound after throwing 2.1 innings. She gave up four hits and three runs, two of which were earned. Rutledge came in for relief of Fowler and threw three innings. She gave up three hits, three runs, and struck out three before Curry closed the game out. Curry threw 1.1 innings, striking out one Golden Bear and holding them hitless over their final five at-bats. 

UP NEXT

The Hawks will travel to St. Augustine, Fla., to compete in the Old Coast Classic Tournament hosted by Flagler on Saturday, February 14th, and Sunday, February 15th. Chowan is set to play two games each day, beginning with Flagler at 11:00 AM on Saturday, followed by Saint Leo at 4:00 PM. On Sunday, the Hawks will face Valdosta State at 11:00 AM before closing the tournament with a second matchup against Flagler at 1:30 PM.
