Hawks Split to Open Play at Old Coast Softball Tournament

ST. AUGUSTINE, F.L. - The Chowan University softball team moved to 2-2 on the year after a split to open play at the Old Coast Softball Tournament hosted by Flagler University in St. Augustine, Florida on Friday afternoon. The Hawks dealt the home team a 2-0 shut out in their opening game and dropped a tightly contested 5-3 contest to Saint Leo in the nightcap. 

Chowan's Kyra Helton was perfect at the plate in the 2-0 win over Flagler, going 3-3 with an RBI and a run scored to help propel the Hawks to their second win of the season. Mackenzie Curry and Abby Rutledge combined efforts to hold Flagler to two hits and no scores in the opening game.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE 

Kyra Helton went 3-3 at the plate for the Hawks in the first game and helped spark the scoring efforts in the 3rd inning with an RBI single. Makenzie Curry, Blair Elliot, and Calliope James all collected hits in the win. Curry pitched 4.1 innings of shutout ball, holding Flagler to 1 hit and striking out a batter. She picked up her second win of the year after the gem of an outing. Rutledge came in to throw the last 2.2 innings for the save. She struck out 3 batters and gave up one hit in the game. 

Chowan was held to just two hits in the nightcap against Saint Leo. The Hawks battled to cut into the Saint Leo lead after scoring 3 runs in the 3rd and 4th innings, but couldn't quite put enough offense together to make the full comeback, falling 5-3. 

Emily Fowler pitched the loss after throwing 2.1 innings, giving up two hits and two runs. Curry came in to throw the final 4.2 innings of the game. She gave up three runs on five hits. Hope Soria and Ava Mizell picked up the Hawks two hits in the game. 

UP NEXT 

The Hawks will play Valdosta State University at 10:00am on Saturday, February 14th followed by Flagler at 12:30pm. Fans can follow the game by logging onto the athletics website and finding the GAME DAY CENTRAL button.
