Hawks Drop Home Opener to Tusculum After Strong Fourth Quarter

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan University men's lacrosse team hosted Tusculum University in their home-opening matchup on Tuesday afternoon. Five Hawks found the back of the net to pace the offense as the first quarter ended tied at 3-3. 

Chowan closed the game strong, outscoring the Pioneers 5-3 in the fourth quarter, as the game would come to a 17-11 decision. With the result, the Hawks move to 0-2 on the season.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Chowan struck first at the 9:32 mark of the opening quarter when Julian Wolfe connected with Reed Low for the game's first goal. The Hawks quickly built momentum as Justin Hill followed with an unassisted score at 8:07. Wolfe then added a goal of his own at 7:16, to close out the first quarter.

Low accounted for the Hawks' lone goal of the second quarter. Coming out of halftime, Seth MacKenzie opened the third-quarter scoring for Chowan with a goal off an assist from Hill at the 11:56 mark. Low found the net again at 6:05 to keep the offense rolling.

In the fourth quarter, Todd Egan scored back-to-back goals, assisted by MacKenzie and Litchfield. Hill later scored off a feed from Low, while Low closed out the Hawks' scoring with two more goals, assisted by Wolfe and Owen Williams.

Low led the Hawks with five goals and one assist, totaling 12 shots with 10 on goal while adding two ground balls. Hill finished with two goals and an assist, recording two shots–one on goal, along with a caused turnover and a ground ball. Egan added two goals and an assist on four shots–three on goal, and collected a ground ball. MacKenzie contributed a goal and an assist, placing four of his five shots on target.

Defensively, Harry Edwards tallied three ground balls and caused four turnovers. Isaiah Gill added three ground balls and three caused turnovers. In goal, Rocco Smith played all 60 minutes, recording a season-high 20 saves.

 

UP NEXT

The Hawks travel to Davis & Elkins College in Elkins, West Virginia to continue non-conference play on Saturday, February 21. The game is scheduled for a 5:00 PM start time.
