Hawks Softball Wrap up Play at Old Coast Tournament

ST. AUGUSTINE, F.L. - The Chowan University softball team moved to 3-3 on the year after a day two split at the Old Coast Softball Tournament hosted by Flagler University. The Hawks opened the day with a tough 8-2 loss to Valdosta State but bounced back to beat Flagler 2-1 in dramatic fashion in the nightcap.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE 

The Hawks were held to two runs in the opening game against Valdosta State but got a multiple hit game from Makenzie Curry. Curry finished the game 2-3 at the plate while also logging 3.0 innings on the mound. Calliope James, Kailyn Springle, and Lenita Bryson each logged a hit in the game. 

Chowan's Julianna Kellogg drove in the winning run in the top of the 10th inning to beat Flagler 2-1 in the second game of the day. Lexie Ritchie opened the top of the 10th inning with a single to right center field. Alexis Denham came in to pinch run for Ritchie. She stole second base, and then Kellogg doubled to left center field, scoring Denham for second. Denham's run proved to be the game winner. Abby Rutledge went to work in the top of the 10th on the mound where she retired the side for the ultimate 2-1 win. Rutledge was credited with the win on the mound after going 5.0 innings, scattering three hits and one run. Calliope James ended the game with 2 hits to lead the Hawks offensively. 

UP NEXT 

The Hawks will host Elizabeth City State and Shaw University on Thursday, February 19th. The first game of the day will be at 11:00am at Hawks Field.
