MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan University softball team opened its home slate with a sweep over Elizabeth City State University and Shaw University on Wednesday afternoon. The Hawks took control early against the Vikings earning a 7-1 victory and followed with a six-run third inning against the Bears to secure a 9-2 victory in game two. With the wins, Chowan improves to 5-3 overall and 2-0 on the day.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
In game one, the Hawks plated seven runs against Elizabeth City State, scoring in the second, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. After surrendering a run in the top of the first, Chowan held the Vikings scoreless the rest of the game, scoring three runs in the second inning alone.
Kaitlyn Springle led the offense with three runs scored, two hits, and an RBI, while Ava Mizell added a hit and two RBI. Julianna Kellogg and Hope Soria each recorded a hit and a run scored, with Soria also driving in a run. Alexis Denham and Kyndal Hopkins contributed RBI as well. In the circle, Calliope James tossed a complete game, pitching all seven innings to earn her first win of the season.
In game two against Shaw, the Hawks broke through after two scoreless innings with a six-run third frame. Kyra Helton started the rally with an RBI double to left field that scored Mizell. Helton later stole third and came home on a single by Makenzi Curry. Lexie Ritchie, pinch running for Curry, crossed the plate soon after, followed by runs from Spingle, Bryson, and James.
Chowan added two runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth to seal the 9-2 victory. Soria finished with a run, a hit, and three RBI, while Helton recorded two hits, a run scored, and an RBI. Bryson tallied a hit, run, and RBI, and both Baccus and Curry added a hit and RBI. Curry earned her third win of the season after pitching six innings, with Abby Rutledge entering in relief in the seventh.
