Hawks Compete Strong against Virginia Wesleyan

MURFREESBORO, N.C. - The Chowan University men's and women's swim teams hosted the Virginia Wesleyan University Marlins in a dual meet on Saturday morning. The Hawks and Marlins were able to beat the storm moving with an early start. The Hawks took first place 17 of the event's 26 races giving the men a 90-64 win and allowing the women to finish just behind the Marlins at 83-58.

INSIDE THE RESULTS 

The Hawks competed in their third straight Saturday competition in the month of January and will wrap up the month with their fourth meet on the 31st at home. The Chowan men opened the meet with a 200 medley relay win. Aleksei Belolipetskii, Robert Liz Cabrera, Stefan Reedy, and Dimitrije Markovic combined efforts to take the top spot. The quad relay team touched the wall at 1:53.65 to get full points in the event. 

Emma Rooney took the top spot in the 400 freestyle with a finishing time of 5:03.62. She turned in her fastest time of the season in this event with her first place finish. Michael Grenier turned in a top time of 4:35.96 to take full points in the 400 freestyle. 

Lina Danna finished just out of first place in the 100 freestyle with a 1:06.70 time. Belolipetskii touched the wall at 54.19 to take the top spot in the 100 freestyle event with Quintin Mitchell (59.79) and Christopher Goode (1:08.68) finishing up in 3rd and 4th place respectively. 

Sara Turanjanin took home the top spot in the 50 meter backstroke with a time of 32.13 while Stefan Reedy took the top spot on the men's side with a 30.93 finishing time. Vanja Romic touched the wall at 36.97 for a 2nd place finish in the 50 meter breaststroke, just milliseconds off the top finish. Michael Grenier finished 1st in the 50 meter breaststroke with a time of 34.13 while Danna wrapped up the 100 meter butterfly just off 1st place with a 1:18.96 second place finish. 

Emma Rooney and Dimitrije Markovic both swam to first place finishes in the 200 meter freestyle to garner the event's top points. Hasnae Idrissi and Ariana Vizcaya finished in 4th and 8th places respectively in the 50 meter free while Liz Cabrera and Reedy finished 1-2 in the same event on the men's side. 

Turanjanin easily swam to a first place finish in the 100 meter backstroke while Danna took home the top spot in the 100 meter butterfly. Belolipetskii took the top spot in the 100 meter butterfly on the men's side while Mitchell and Goode finished in 3rd and 5th places respectively. Markovic and Rooney wrapped up the individual events with top finishes in the 100 meter IM races to add to the Hawks points total. 

 Both the men's and women's teams wrapped up the event with top finishes in the 200 meter freestyle relay event. Rooney, Turanjanin, Romic, and Idrissi touched the wall at 2:01.61 for top points on the women's side. On the men's side Reedy, Belolipetskii, Markovic, and Liz Cabrera teamed up to close out the meet with 1:41.12 first place finish in 200 freestyle relay. 

UP NEXT 

The Hawks will swim again on Saturday, January 31st in a double-dual meet against Barton College and King University. This meet will serve as senior day for the Chowan University men's and women's swim teams. First swim is set for 1:00pm at the Bynum Brown Pool.
