GREENWOOD, S.C. – Chowan Volleyball opened play at the Redderson Invitational on Friday with a split, earning their first win of the season in a 3-0 sweep over Winston-Salem State before falling to host Lander later in the day. With the results, the Hawks move to 1-5 on the year, while WSSU drops to 1-2 and Lander improves to 3-2.
Chowan will return to action on Saturday for day two of the tournament, aiming to build momentum with a pair of victories.

Chowan controlled the match from start to finish, defeating Winston-Salem State in three straight sets. Anna Holcombe led the attack with 14 kills, while Alauna Wilson-Linn chipped in 11. Gabriella Figueroa provided balance with five kills and a match-high four aces, while also contributing on defense with a block. Setter Alexandra Liggeri ran the offense with 31 assists, and Diana Rodriguez anchored the back row with 17 digs to go along with Holcombe's 14.
The Hawks faced a tougher second match against tournament host Lander, falling despite a strong defensive effort. Gabriella Figueroa paced Chowan with six kills, followed closely by Anna Holcombe (five) and Makeda Edwards (four). Madison Henderson made her presence felt at the net with four blocks, while Liggeri dished out 12 assists and Rodriguez once again led the defense with 14 digs.
