MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan University softball team split their road doubleheader against Virginia State on Sunday afternoon.

In Game One, Chowan got on the board in the third inning when Calliope James singled up the middle, driving in two runs. Emily Fowler followed with a sacrifice fly to center, bringing in another run. The Hawks continued to rally in the fifth inning. Elizabeth Ingle singled to right, plating a run, and Fowler added a single to drive in another. Ingle then came home on a passed ball, and Kyra Helton capped off the inning with a single down the left field line to bring in one more run.
Mckenzie Misenheimer, James, and Ingle each recorded three hits in game one, while Helton, James, and Fowler drove in two runs apiece.
Fowler took the loss on the mound, pitching four innings and falling to 0-2 on the season. She was relieved by Abby Rutledge and Alex Bishop.
In Game Two, the Hawks started the scoring in the first inning when James drove in a run with a single to left field. Ingle reached on a fielder's choice, bringing home Ava Mizell, and Fowler followed with another fielder's choice, driving in another run. In the third inning, Ingle singled up the middle to plate a run, and Fowler added a sacrifice fly to score James.
Haileigh Boone started in the circle for the Hawks, pitching two innings. Abby Rutledge, James, and Fowler each came in relief for Boone.
