Hawks Face Road Setback as Broncos Pull Away Late

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Chowan University women's basketball team fell to non-conference opponent Fayetteville State University on Monday evening. Aquarius Pettaway recorded a season-high, while Alexandria James-Fearon also reached double figures to pace the Hawks offensively.

Chowan opened the game with an early advantage, capitalizing on a seven-minute scoring drought by the Broncos in the first quarter. Fayetteville State responded coming out of the half as the Hawks were unable to keep the momentum they built in the opening quarters.

With Monday's result, Chowan moves to 3-4 overall and remains 1-2 in conference play.

Chowan found its first points two minutes into the game at the free-throw line, as Nyeisha Savage converted a foul shot. Savage finished the night with five points and six rebounds. The Hawks followed with an 11-0 scoring run, capitalizing on nine missed Bronco field-goal attempts and four turnovers. Ayanna Rutledge led Chowan after the opening quarter with seven points, as the Hawks claimed an 18-10 advantage. Rutledge also finished the game with six rebounds and two steals.

The Broncos settled in during the second quarter, but Alexandria James-Fearon helped Chowan maintain the lead heading into halftime. James-Fearon scored six of her 10 points in the period, ending the night with a perfect 4-4 shooting performance at the free-throw line, and adding five rebounds, a block, and a steal.

Yasmine Brown and Aquarius Pettaway led the Hawks offensively in the third quarter with five points apiece. Brown finished the game with nine points, while Petteway recorded a season high, scoring her 11th and 12th points early in the fourth quarter to open up the final period.

The fourth quarter also featured appearances from Jade Clowney and Keilani Johnson, as Clowney knocked down a three-pointer and Johnson converted a pair of free throws.

As a team, Chowan shot a season-high 81.3% (13-16) from the free-throw line and collected 40 rebounds. The Hawks' bench accounted for 31 of the team's 55 points, while Chowan added 11 points off turnovers, 14 second-chance points, and 12 points in the paint.

The Hawks will return to their home court on Saturday, December 13, to continue conference play against Emmanuel University at 2:00 PM in the Hawks Athletic Center.
