Down-to-the-Wire Finish Decides Hawks Versus Trojans Matchup

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan University women's basketball team battled Virginia State University down to the final second in a non-conference matchup on Saturday afternoon. The game remained neck-and-neck throughout, with Chowan winning the first quarter and gaining their largest lead—a seven-point advantage—midway through the second quarter.  Three Hawks reached double digits in the competitive matchup with Yasmine Brown having a career high day to lead Chowan.

With the results of the matchup, Chowan moves to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in Conference Carolinas play.

Yasmine Brown opened the scoring for the Hawks, knocking down a three-pointer in response to the Trojans' opening basket. She led all scorers with a career-high 26 points on 7-13 shooting, getting to the free-throw line 16 times and converting 11 attempts. Brown also added five rebounds and six assists, including Chowan's final bucket that tied the game at 71-71.

Daneesha Briggs contributed 16 points, with 12 of those coming from beyond the arc. Briggs hit back-to-back three-pointers midway through the third quarter—assisted by Brown—to counter a running Virginia State lead. She struck from three again in the fourth to give the Hawks a one-point advantage with seven minutes remaining. Briggs also added five rebounds and a steal.

Nyeisha Savage made her presence felt on the defensive end, grabbing five rebounds—four on defense—and recording a game-high six blocks in under 18 minutes. Two of her rejections came in the final three minutes, giving Chowan an opportunity to break the tie. Desiree Askew contributed a season-high 10 points, hitting multiple crucial layups and going a perfect 4-4 from the free-throw line. Sa'ni Savage added five points and six rebounds in 10 minutes of action.

As a team, the Hawks shot 47.7% (21-44) from the field and 55.6% (5-9) from three-point range. Chowan went 24-38 (63.2%) from the free-throw line and pulled down 34 total rebounds, including 27 on the defensive end. The Hawks also tallied eight blocks and six steals, making several key stops in the final two minutes that kept the game within reach.

The Hawks will continue non-conference play on Monday, December 8, when they travel to Fayetteville, North Carolina, to face Fayetteville State at 6:00 PM.
