Chowan Controls the Glass in Tight Road Loss to Bobcats

BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Chowan University women's basketball team opened conference play on the road Saturday afternoon, coming up short in a 62-58 decision at Lees-McRae. The Hawks used a 7-0 scoring run in the second quarter to pull within three at halftime, but couldn't overcome a strong third-quarter push by the Bobcats.

Nyeisha Savage turned in a strong performance, recording a double-double and leading the Hawks in three stat categories.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Nyeisha Savage led Chowan with 15 points on 7-14 shooting while pulling down a game-high 15 rebounds—nine of them on the offensive end. She also added three blocks and two steals in 27 minutes.

Desiree Askew added nine points and six rebounds, while Ayanna Rutledge also scored nine and went 5-6 at the free-throw line. Alexandria James-Fearon stayed active on both ends with eight points and seven boards, and Sa'ni Savage contributed three points and nine rebounds in 15 minutes off the bench.

As a team, the Hawks shot 30.8% (20-65) from the floor and 60.7% (17-28) at the stripe. Chowan dominated the paint with 38 points and controlled the glass with 54 total rebounds, more than doubling Lees-McRae's total. The Hawks' 27 defensive boards and strong effort on the offensive glass led to 21 second-chance points. Chowan's defensive pressure also forced 21 turnovers, converting them into 17 points.
