Chowan University Fall Sports Kick Off 2024 Season with Action-Packed Weekend

MURFREESBORO, N.C. –. After weeks of training sessions, team meetings, and grueling practices, the Chowan University fall sports will make their 2024 season debuts beginning Thursday, September 5th. All six of the department's fall sports teams will be in action beginning Thursday and running through the weekend. Cheerleading will also be opening up their sideline season with a trip to cheer for the Hawks football team at Elizabeth City State University. 

FIRST UP

The CU Men's Soccer team is on the road Thursday, September 5th as they head off to Banner Elk, N.C. for a match up with Lees-McRae in the Shope Classic. Match time is set for 3:00pm. A season ago, the Hawks shut down the Bobcats 1-0 after Charley Leech scored what would be the game winner in the 64th minute play on the Hawks home pitch. Thursday's match is the season debut for both teams. 

FRIDAY DEBUTS

The men's and women's cross country teams will make their 2024 season debut at the Downback Invitational hosted by Methodist University in Fayetteville, North Carolina. The Hawks are led by a pair of seasoned runners on the men's side in Andrew Garrison and Kani Ellis. The women's team features a slew of newcomers but do return runners Olivia Mock, Feidi Abreu Rodriquez, and Sarai Sanders. Be sure to check out the athletics website for finishing times on Friday night. 

The CU women's soccer team will travel to Salisbury and Catawba College on Friday where they will be playing in the Catawba College Soccer Tournament. Two of the nations top NCAA D2 teams will be featured in the four-team tournament with #15 Embry Riddle and host team, Catawba College, ranked #13 in the nation. The Hawks will face off against Georgia College on Friday with first touch set for 5:00pm. They will follow that match up with a 1:00pm match up with #15 Embry Riddle. The Hawks 

The Chowan Volleyball program is hosting a four-team tournament with six matches spread out over Friday and Saturday. While match play in the tournament begins at 2:00pm on Friday, the Hawks will make their court debut at 6:00pm against Newberry College. Saturday play will begin at 9:00am and continue through the last match at 1:00pm. The tournament can be found by logging onto the athletics website @ gocuhawks.com. 

SATURDAY'S GRIDIRON ACTION

The Hawks Football team takes on Elizabeth City State in a non-conference game at 1:00pm on Saturday. Once conference rivals, these two teams have met 14 times since their first meeting in 2008. In their last outing against the Vikings in 2022, the Hawks posted a 54-8 win, their largest margin of victory in the two team's playing history. Second year skipper, Paul Johnson, will lead the Hawks onto the gridiron with the two teams meeting for the first time as non-conference opponents.
