Chowan Slips In Pair Of One-Run Contests

DUNCAN, S.C. – The Chowan Softball team rallied but was unable to come away with a win in a pair of one-run contests in Conference Carolinas action against Converse on Sunday afternoon.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORES

Lindsey Richter led the Hawks with five hits.  Haleigh Reid chipped in with four hits.  Mckenzie Misenheimer, Megan Leon, and Serena Riley added three hits each.  Misenheimer posted a home run and a double, while Riley posted two doubled.  Leon led the team with three RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game One: Chowan 8, Converse 9

Chowan jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Mckenzie Misenheimer put the Hawks on the board with a solo home run.  Haleigh Reid singled up the middle before Tessa Nicholson picked up a single to right.  Serena Riley posted a RBI groundout to lead 2-0.

The Hawks doubled their lead in the third inning as Lindsey Richter singled and Mckenzie Misenheimer drew a walk before moving into scoring position on a groundout.  Tessa Nicholson plated Richter on a groundout before Serena Riley singled to lead 4-0.

Converse responded in the bottom of the fourth with five runs on four hits and an error to take the lead 5-4.

Chowan rallied in the top of the sixth as Serena Riley doubled to left.  An error allowed Riley to come around to score.  Abbie Sutton produced a pinch-hit double to plate a run prior to Lindsey Richter singled up the middle to put the Hawks up 7-5.

The Valkyries answered in the bottom of the inning with four runs off five hits to regain the lead 9-7.

In the top of the seventh, Tessa Nicholson reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second on an error and third on a groundout.  Megan Leon singled to right to plate Nicholson to cut the deficit to 9-8.  Leon would swipe second and moved to third on the misplay, but a flyout would leave the tying run at third.

Game Two: Chowan 5, Converse 6

Converse jumped on the board with three runs off four hits in the bottom of the first inning.  The Valkyries added to their lead in the third with three runs off four hits and an error to lead 6-0.

The rally would start in the top of the fourth inning as Haleigh Reid singled up the middle before coming around to score on Megan Leon's double down the left field line, 6-1.

In the sixth inning, Mckenzie Misenheimer doubled to left and stole third.  Tessa Nicholson picked up a single before forcing a throw on a stolen base allowing Misenheimer to score.  Megan Leon singled to plate Nicholson before Caston Garland singled to cut the deficit to 6-4.  Hannah Moseley singled before a bases-loaded groundout ended the threat.

Chowan continued to chip away as Mckenzie Misenheimer reached on an infield single and moved to second on a wild pitch.  Haleigh Reid would plate Misenheimer with a single to right prior to being wiped off the bases on a double play.  Serena Riley tried to spark another rally with a double before the final out was recorded.

UP NEXT

Chowan returns home for a pair of Conference Carolinas doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday as the Hawks host Francis Marion and Barton.  First pitch against the Patriots on Saturday, April 1 is slated for 1pm.
